Selection Procedure
The Physical Test is followed by an Interview. Meritorious candidates are sent for a 1-yr training programme.
To enter as IPS officer, you need to clear the UPSC exam. For entry as Sub-Inspectors in BSF, ITBP, CRPF, CBI & CISF you have to take the exam conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC).
Although there is no specific reservation for women, separate merit lists are prepared for women at both Constables & Sub-Inspectors levels.
During your training period as a SI you will study forensic science and law, as your job will involve a fair amount of investigation. On the other hand, the training for constables focuses on outdoor activities to strengthen their endurance since they have to do a lot of field work – patrolling and picket duty.
IPS officers in their 2-yr training at the Police Academy are taught management, law, leadership and supervision, among other things. Irrespective of their ranks, all candidates are trained to tackle terrorists, swim, ride and drive.
Growth Prospects: As per the rulebook, everyone starting at the Constable or SI level has to move at least two ranks during their tenure in the department. However stagnation is a common feature. An alternate method to get quick promotions is to take the various exams conducted by SSC or UPSC.
